Stainless Steel vs Ceramic Coffee Mugs
This comparison usually gets settled with "steel keeps it hotter", which is true and not the whole story. Steel and ceramic fail and succeed in different places, and which one is right depends almost entirely on how long you take to drink a cup of coffee.
Heat retention
Not close. A vacuum-insulated stainless steel mug keeps coffee hot for four to six hours with the lid on. Thick ceramic manages perhaps thirty to forty-five minutes at drinking temperature. Note the qualifier though: this advantage belongs to vacuum-insulated steel. A single-wall steel mug is actually worse than ceramic, because metal conducts heat straight out through the wall.
Taste
Ceramic wins clearly. Glazed ceramic is chemically inert, so nothing transfers into the coffee. Uncoated stainless steel can contribute a faint metallic note, most noticeable with light-roast and acidic coffees where there is less to mask it. Whether you can detect it varies by person and by coffee; plenty of people never notice. Ceramic-lined steel mugs exist precisely to remove this problem.
Durability
Steel wins, obviously. A dropped ceramic mug on a tiled floor is finished. A dropped steel mug gets a dent. The caveat is that steel's insulation depends on an intact vacuum seal, so a hard enough impact can destroy the mug's actual function while leaving it looking fine — if the outside gets warm when it is full of hot coffee, the seal has gone and it cannot be repaired.
Microwave
Ceramic wins by default: steel cannot go in a microwave at all. If reheating is part of your routine, that settles it. Though the counter-argument is that a good insulated mug means you should not need to reheat.
Cleaning
Roughly even. Both are usually dishwasher safe. Ceramic shows coffee stains more but is easy to clean with baking soda. Steel hides stains but holds odors in lids and gaskets, and powder-coated exteriors dull with repeated dishwasher cycles.
Weight and feel
Subjective, but most people prefer drinking from ceramic. A warm ceramic mug in the hand is part of the experience of morning coffee in a way an insulated steel body — designed specifically to stay cool to the touch — is not.
