Cat mugs, and mugs of your cat
There are two kinds of cat mug and they suit different people. Illustrated designs — a line drawing, a sleeping cat curved around the base, a paw print near the handle — work as a general gift for someone who likes cats. Custom photo mugs work for someone who likes one specific cat, which is most cat owners, and they land considerably harder.
If you are going the photo route, cats are easier to photograph well than people. Get the camera down to their eye level rather than shooting from standing, use daylight from a window instead of a flash, and crop tight to the head and shoulders. Black cats need more light than you think — without it, the face disappears into a dark shape and the printed mug shows nothing recognisable.
Sculpted mugs with a cat-shaped handle or a figure inside the rim are the third option. They look excellent and need slightly more care: a modelled interior is harder to clean, and a sculpted handle can be less comfortable than a plain one. Check the handle opening if the person you are buying for has larger hands.

How do I photograph a black cat for a mug?
Use plenty of daylight, ideally from a window to the side rather than behind the cat. Avoid flash, which flattens the face. Without enough light, the features will not print.
Are cat mugs dishwasher safe?
Printed and glazed cat mugs are. Sculpted mugs with fine modelled detail last longer with hand washing.
