Why 11 oz became the standard

Eleven ounces, around 325 ml, is the default American mug size, and it holds up because it fits several things at once. It takes a full cup of filter coffee with room for milk, it matches the dose a single tea bag is designed for, and it is small enough that the last mouthful is still warm. Larger mugs win on capacity and lose on temperature.

It is also the most practical size to own. Eleven-ounce mugs fit standard dishwasher racks, stack in normal kitchen cupboards, and sit under every drip coffee machine without needing the tray removed. Fifteen and 20 oz mugs regularly fail at least one of those.

If you are buying a gift and cannot ask what someone prefers, 11 or 12 oz is the safe answer — it is the size most people already use. Move up to 15 oz only if you know they drink large lattes or filter coffee slowly, and down to 6 oz or less only for espresso drinkers.
