There is a difference between a mug that is unusual and a mug that is impractical. Sculptural handles, asymmetric bodies and heavily textured glazes can all work beautifully — as long as the mug still balances when full, the handle still takes a finger or two, and the interior is smooth enough to clean. The test is simple: could you drink from it every day for a month? Plenty of striking mugs fail that.
The most interesting mug designs tend to come from a constraint rather than a gimmick. A thumb rest carved into the handle, a foot that lifts the base off a hot table, a slightly flared rim that changes how the liquid meets your lip. These are functional decisions that happen to look distinctive, which is why they still look good in five years.
Unusual glazes are where a mug becomes genuinely one of a kind. Reactive and crystalline glazes behave differently in every firing, so no two mugs come out the same. That variation is the point, but it means the mug you receive will differ slightly from the photograph — in shade, in the way the glaze breaks over the rim, in where it pools at the base. If you want an exact match to an image, choose a printed design instead.

Will my mug look exactly like the photo?
Printed designs will. Reactive and crystalline glazes vary between firings, so shade and glaze patterning differ slightly from mug to mug. That variation is intentional.
Are unusual shapes harder to clean?
Narrow bases and sculptural interiors need a bottle brush rather than a sponge. We stick to designs with smooth, reachable interiors for exactly this reason.
Are unique mugs dishwasher safe?
Most are, but textured and reactive glazes last longer with hand washing. Any mug with applied metallic detail should always be hand washed.
What makes a good gift mug for someone who has everything?
Something with visible making in it — a hand-thrown shape, a reactive glaze, an unusual profile. It reads as an object rather than a purchase, which is the difference at that point.

Can I design a completely custom mug?
You can supply your own artwork, photo or text on our custom mugs. Bespoke shapes and glazes are not something we produce to order.
