Buying a mug set that lasts
The argument for a set is replaceability and shelf space. Matching mugs stack, they fit a cupboard properly, and a set of six covers a family plus visitors without anyone drinking from the mug with the chip in it. The argument against is that when one breaks, the set is no longer a set — which is why buying six rather than four is usually the smarter choice even for two people.
Pick a size everyone will use. Twelve ounces is the most flexible: big enough for filter coffee with milk, not so big that tea goes cold. Sets in 15 oz suit heavy coffee drinkers; sets under 10 oz end up used for espresso and little else. If the household is split between coffee and tea drinkers, 12 oz keeps everyone reasonably happy.
Two practical checks. Stackable mugs save real cupboard space, but confirm they stack without the rims scraping each other, which chips glaze over time. And if the set has a wooden or metal stand, remember that the stand is decorative — mugs on a stand collect dust and are less convenient than mugs in a cupboard, unless the counter is where they actually get used.

Our glazed ceramic and stoneware sets are. Load them so they do not touch each other — mugs knocking together in a dishwasher is a common cause of rim chips.
