What makes a good sublimation mug

Sublimation does not print onto ceramic — it prints into a polymer coating bonded to the mug. That coating is the entire product. A cheap blank with an uneven or thin coating gives patchy color, visible edges where the coating stops, and a print that dulls after a few washes. A well-coated blank gives even, saturated color right to the edge of the printable area and holds it for years.

The white matters too. Sublimation ink is translucent, so whatever is underneath shows through. A blank with a slightly grey or creamy base will shift every color in your design, most noticeably in skin tones and pale backgrounds. Consistency across a batch matters just as much if you are producing an order — mugs from different production runs can print visibly differently.

On process: most ceramic mug blanks press at roughly 180–200°C for three to five minutes in a mug press, though you should always follow the specific guidance for the blank you are using. Let the mug cool before removing the transfer, since lifting it hot can smear the edges. And do not sublimate a mug that has no coating at all — the ink simply will not bond, whatever the temperature.

What temperature do you press sublimation mugs at?

Typically 180–200°C for three to five minutes in a mug press. Always follow the guidance supplied with your specific blank, as coatings differ.

Can you sublimate onto any ceramic mug?

No. The mug must have a polymer coating for the ink to bond to. An uncoated ceramic mug will not hold a sublimation print at any temperature.

Why is my sublimation print faded or patchy?

Usually uneven coating on the blank, insufficient pressure, or too short a press time. Patchiness that follows a pattern across the mug points to the blank rather than your settings.

Are sublimation mugs dishwasher safe?

Properly pressed sublimation prints on a good blank survive regular dishwasher use. Under-pressed prints and poor coatings are the ones that fade quickly.

Why do my colors look different from my screen?

Sublimation ink is translucent and the coating base shows through, so a slightly off-white blank shifts every color. Screens are also backlit, so printed results run darker and warmer.
