Mugs for people who read

A reading mug has one requirement the others do not: you are only holding it with one hand, and often not looking at it. That makes stability the thing to check. A broad base and a low centre of gravity matter more than they do at a desk, and a mug that tapers narrow at the bottom is exactly the wrong shape to set down beside a chair without looking.

Capacity should match how long you read for. If you settle in for an hour, an 11 oz mug means getting up halfway through — a 15 oz mug in thick stoneware keeps a drink warm long enough to finish it. If you read in short bursts, smaller is better, since coffee that goes cold at the bottom of a big mug gets poured away.

On the designs themselves: literary quotes work best when they are short and not the most famous line from the book. A well-chosen phrase reads as a shared reference; the opening line of a novel everyone has seen on a tote bag reads as merchandise. Our custom text option exists partly for this — a line that matters to one particular reader will always beat a bestseller quote.

Book mug questions, answered

What size mug is best for reading?

Fifteen ounces in thick stoneware if you read for an hour or more, so the drink stays warm to the bottom. Eleven ounces suits shorter reading sessions.

Can I have my own quote printed?

Yes, using our custom text option. Keep it short — one line stays legible at mug size, and short quotes read better than long ones anyway.

Are book mugs dishwasher safe?

Yes. Printed text is heat-cured rather than applied as a transfer, so it survives regular dishwasher cycles without peeling.

Which mugs are most stable to set down beside a chair?

Ones with a wide base relative to the rim and a heavy stoneware body. Tapered mugs with narrow feet are the ones that get knocked over.

Do you have mugs for specific books or authors?

We keep to general literary designs and quotes in the public domain. For a line from a specific modern book, use the custom text option.

Are book mugs a good gift for a reader?

They work well because they get used during the activity itself. A short line the person actually cares about beats a famous quote every time.
