How to choose the right mug

Most people own a drawer full of mugs and reach for the same one every morning. That mug usually wins on three things: how it holds heat, how it sits in your hand, and how much it holds. Thick stoneware and ceramic mugs keep coffee warm the longest because the wall itself stores heat. Thin porcelain and glass mugs cool faster, which suits tea and espresso where you drink sooner. Double-walled travel mugs sit at the other extreme and will hold temperature for hours.

Capacity matters more than it sounds. A standard American coffee mug is 11 to 12 oz, which is a filter coffee with room for milk. Anything from 15 oz up counts as a large mug and suits people who refill less often or drink latte-style. Espresso and cortado drinkers want 3 to 6 oz so the drink does not spread thin and cool. If you are buying a gift and cannot ask, 12 oz is the safe answer.

The handle is the part nobody checks and everybody notices later. Look for an opening wide enough for two fingers, and a handle that meets the body high and low rather than in one small tab. A mug that balances near the handle feels lighter than its weight suggests. If a mug is going in the dishwasher and microwave several times a week, favor glazed stoneware or ceramic over hand-painted or metallic-trimmed finishes, which wear faster.

Yes. Our custom and photo mugs let you upload an image, add a name or write your own message. Upload at the highest resolution you have — around 1000 px on the shortest side gives the cleanest print.

How do I stop a mug from staining?

Rinse it soon after you finish rather than letting coffee or tea dry in the base. For stains that have set in, a paste of baking soda and a little water lifts most of it without scratching the glaze.
