How big is a large coffee mug?

A standard mug is 11 to 12 oz. Large starts at about 15 oz and the useful upper limit for daily drinking is around 20 oz — beyond that, the coffee at the bottom is cold before you reach it unless the mug is insulated. Sixteen ounces is the sweet spot: a full pour-over or a proper latte, in a mug you can still lift comfortably with one hand.

Weight is the thing people underestimate. A 20 oz ceramic mug filled with coffee weighs around a kilo, and that load hangs off the handle. Look for a handle with a wide opening and two contact points on the body rather than a small decorative loop, and a base broad enough that the mug does not feel tippy on a cluttered desk. Heavy mugs are also the best heat retainers, which is the reason to buy one in the first place.

Large mugs earn their keep beyond coffee. They take a full bowl of soup, they work for instant noodles, they are the right shape for hot chocolate with something on top, and a 15 oz mug is the standard size for mug cakes and mug brownies — an 11 oz mug will overflow. If you bake in mugs, check the base is fully glazed and marked microwave safe.

Large coffee mug questions, answered

How many oz is a large coffee mug?

Large coffee mugs generally start at 15 oz and run up to 20 oz. Anything above 20 oz is usually sold as an oversized or soup mug.

Do large mugs keep coffee hot for longer?

Yes, up to a point. More liquid and a thicker wall mean more stored heat. But a wide opening loses heat quickly, so a tall 16 oz mug outperforms a wide, shallow one of the same volume.

Is a 15 oz mug too big for everyday coffee?

Not if you drink filter coffee or milk-based drinks. For espresso or a small black coffee, 15 oz is far too much surface area and the drink will cool before you finish it.

Can I make a mug cake in a large mug?

Yes — 15 oz is the standard recommendation for mug cakes and mug brownies. Smaller mugs overflow as the batter rises. Check the mug is marked microwave safe first.

Are large coffee mugs dishwasher safe?

Our glazed ceramic and stoneware large mugs are dishwasher safe. Check they sit securely on the rack; tall mugs can tip and fill with water during the cycle.

Can large mugs be personalized?

Yes. The larger print area actually suits photos better than a standard mug, since there is more room for a full image without it wrapping too far around the handle.
