What separates a soup mug from a big coffee mug

Capacity is only part of it. A soup mug needs a mouth wide enough for a spoon to move freely without scraping your knuckles against the rim, which means a wider, shallower profile than a tall 20 oz coffee mug of the same volume. It also needs a handle you can get two fingers or a whole hand through, because a full soup mug is heavy and you are often carrying it to a sofa rather than lifting it off a desk.

Sixteen to 20 oz is the useful range. That is a proper portion of soup, a full serving of instant noodles with room for the water, or a generous bowl of chili. Below 16 oz you are eating from a large mug rather than a mug of soup; above 20 oz the weight starts to work against the handle.

Microwave performance is the thing to check. Soup mugs get reheated far more often than coffee mugs, so you want thick, evenly glazed stoneware with no metallic decoration and, ideally, a handle that stays cool enough to grip after two minutes on full power. Thick handles heat more slowly than thin ones, which is one more reason the sturdy shapes win in this category.

Soup mug questions, answered

How many oz should a soup mug be?

Between 16 and 20 oz. That covers a proper portion of soup or a full serving of noodles without becoming too heavy to hold by the handle.

Can soup mugs go in the microwave?

Glazed stoneware soup mugs without metallic decoration are microwave safe. Reheat in shorter bursts and stir between them for even heating.

Does the handle get hot in the microwave?

Thick handles stay cooler than thin ones, but any ceramic will warm up during a long reheat. Use a cloth after two minutes or more on full power.

What is the difference between a soup mug and a soup bowl?

The handle and the depth. A soup mug can be carried and held one-handed, which makes it better for eating away from a table.

Can I use a soup mug for coffee?

You can, but the wide mouth loses heat quickly, so coffee cools faster than it would in a tall mug of the same volume.

Are soup mugs dishwasher safe?

Yes for glazed stoneware. Given they hold oily or fatty foods more often than coffee mugs, a hot dishwasher cycle is genuinely the better clean here.
