Enamel is the classic camping mug material and still the most sensible one. It is a thin steel core coated in glass, which makes it light, near-unbreakable in the ways that matter outdoors, and safe to set directly on a camp stove or the edge of a fire. The trade-off is that enamel conducts heat, so the rim gets hot and coffee cools quickly. That is a fair price for a mug you can drop on a rock without consequence.
Stainless steel camping mugs solve the heat problem in two directions. Single-wall steel behaves much like enamel but will not chip. Double-walled insulated versions keep coffee hot for hours and stay cool to hold — but you cannot heat them directly over a flame, which rules out boiling water in the mug itself. Decide whether you want a mug or a small pot before you choose.
