Why stoneware holds heat better
Stoneware is fired at around 1200–1300°C, considerably hotter than earthenware. The clay vitrifies — partly turns to glass — which makes it dense, non-porous even before glazing, and much harder to chip. That density is also what makes it good at holding heat: there is simply more material per mug to absorb warmth from the coffee and release it slowly.
The trade-off is weight. A stoneware mug is heavier than a porcelain one of the same size, and a large stoneware mug full of coffee is a genuine heft. Most people find that reassuring rather than annoying, but it is worth knowing if you are buying for someone with limited grip strength, where a lighter porcelain mug is the kinder choice.
Speckled stoneware, the finish you see in most modern ceramics, comes from iron particles in the clay body showing through a pale glaze during firing. It is not printed on, which is why it varies subtly between mugs and why it never wears off. Matte stoneware glazes look excellent and pick up tea stains a little more readily than glossy ones, so rinse rather than soak.
Stoneware mug questions, answered
Is stoneware better than ceramic?
Stoneware is a type of ceramic — the denser, higher-fired type. Compared with earthenware it is stronger, less porous and better at holding heat.
Are stoneware mugs dishwasher and microwave safe?
Yes for standard glazed stoneware. Check for metallic detail or an unglazed base, which are the two exceptions.
Do stoneware mugs chip easily?
Less than earthenware. The vitrified body is harder, so stoneware survives everyday knocks better — though nothing ceramic survives a tiled floor.
What causes the speckles in stoneware?
Iron particles in the clay body that show through the glaze during high-temperature firing. It is part of the material rather than a surface decoration, so it never wears off.
Why is stoneware so heavy?
The clay is dense and the walls are usually thicker. That weight is the reason stoneware keeps coffee warm longer than lighter porcelain.
How do I clean matte stoneware?
Rinse soon after use rather than leaving drinks to sit. For set-in tea stains, a baking soda paste lifts them without scratching the matte surface.
