Gothic, not just Halloween
Skull designs used to spike in October and disappear in November. They no longer do. Why these are printed on black
Contrast is the whole point. White line work on a black ceramic body gives the crisp, etched look that this style needs; the same design on a white mug looks washed out and loses the fine detail in the linework. A few colour-heavy designs — sugar skulls, floral skulls with full colour petals — are printed on white instead, because the colour has to carry the design.
